The truth

Your headshot
won't win the
pageant.

No photo ever has. It just introduces you to the judges before they meet you.

What wins is your personality.

So relax, have fun, and bring something fun to wear if you want.

Before you book

Two quick
decisions

01

Candid or posed?

Classic and polished, or loose and natural, your call.

02

Indoor, outdoor, or both?

Studio, on location, or a mix, let's talk it through.

Tell me both when you book.
Candid: titleholder mid-laugh in a black gown and crown
Candidloose, natural
Posed: Miss Utah in crown and black gown, hand on hip

Indoor: Miss Utah's Teen in window light, blush gown and sash

Wardrobe

Bring more
than you think

Solid colors photograph best (skip busy patterns and plaid).

Look for an interesting neckline, nothing too plunging.

We'll shoot4-5 looks
Look one: red gown with a long train, seen from behind
Look 01
Look two: black cocktail dress between white curtains
Look 02
Look three: flowing orange gown under a chandelier
Look 03
Look four: coral ruffle dress, mid-kick in a white paneled room
Look 04

The outfit that surprises everyone is usually the winner.

The fun part

Getting
ready is
half the show

Crown on, hands up, big laugh, this is the energy we're chasing before the camera even comes out.

Makeup

No
highlighter.

Seriously.

This is the #1 thing that trips up a session. Shimmer and highlighter bounce flash straight back at the camera and read as shine, not glow. If you show up with it on, fixing it in retouching is an extra charge.

Go matte, especially cheeks and nose.

Don't take my word for it, take Beyoncé's makeup artist's.

Logistics

A little
planning first

01

Hair/makeup at the studio?

Set it up in advance, not day-of. Need a recommendation? Call me.

02

Reference photos

Send me what you love beforehand, Pinterest, IG, email, whatever's easiest.

03

Social impact initiative shoot?

Call or email ahead so we can plan it right.

04

Running late or something's up?

Just call. I'm easygoing, I just need to know, especially if I've got another session right after yours.

Pack

Bring

  • Crown and sash
  • Outfit and jewelry options (see above)
  • A steamer if you can. We try to have one at the studio, but not guaranteed on location

Beauty timing

  • Get nails done ahead of time, fixing them in retouching costs extra
  • Fix tan lines weeks before your session, not the week of
  • No spray tan or hair dye the day before, if it goes wrong, it shows
  • Skip the boat trip the weekend before. A sunburn doesn't have time to fade and can't be fixed in editing
